The design scene is home to a number of promising young talents just waiting to meet their public. The Newcomer award is our way of honouring these young bold designers. Since the award was established in 2006, we have provided an international platform for young designers reaching out and making a name for themselves in a highly competitive industry. We see the Newcomer award as an opportunity to add a touch of playfulness to our range and think even further outside the box.
The 2020 winner is Alexander Rehn and the product is called Rocca. Alexander comes from Munich, Germany, where he studied interior architecture and product design at The Academy of Fine Arts.
Alexander had a clear idea for his product from the start. He noticed how sedentary we have all become, especially in our offices. His aim was to create a playful stool inspiring the body to move, a way of staying active.
What makes the Rocca stool unique is its simplicity. The ring encourages movement and the seat is comfortable, together they interact to form a unit. At the same time the stool is easy to carry around the modern activity-based office. The name Rocca is a play on “rocking chair”, as you sit and rock on the stool.
We will launch a new exciting product designed by our Newcomer at Stockholm Furniture Fair in February. You can already apply to be our Newcomer 2021, read more here.
We are very happy to announce that ALTO has won the prestigious German Design Award 2020 for Excellent Product Design in the category: Furniture.
The Statement of the Jury:
The combination of filigree underframe and voluminous, inviting cushions gives the sofa its own unmistakeable identity, which is reinforced by the unusual height of the surface of the seat. An interesting piece of furniture, with a comfortable, modern high-quality appearance, which is also functional.

We support the Sustainable Development Goals – an action plan for a world free from poverty, hunger and inequality; a place of peace and justice, where human rights are upheld and our planet is protected. These are big words, but with everyone helping, it can be done.
In embracing the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals, we have picked out eight goals where we can make a difference.
2017 Newcomer competition is now finished.

Welcome to a new materia.se. We have rebuilt the website from scratch and in addition to it being responsive (the content automatically adjusts to fit different screen sizes), we are introducing a number of improved features which we believe you will enjoy. For instance it has never been easier to be inspired. Images can be sorted according to type of environment, furniture or case study. Another feature we have added is the automatic compilation of product details to create a product sheet when you choose to print or save as a PDF. Take some time to have a look around the site and see how the new features can help you.
2014 marks the start of a new communications concept. At Materia, we view our work in a larger perspective, where meetings between people is the driving force for innovative furniture design. We have taken this onboard and highlight it in the “Design meets…” concept which for instance can be seen as printed advertisements in trade magazines and newspapers.
“The interior design sector has already reacted very positively to the new concept. Basing the communicative approach on the everyday lives of people and how our furniture design encounters users provides a genuine and authentic picture of our products,” says Tobias Söder, sales and marketing manager at Materia.
The new concept is also integrated into Materia’s new website, where it has become easier to find inspiration and information.
