During week 14 we celebrate the FSC week! This year, the campaign is about biodiversity among insects and animals found in our forests. They are small, but numerous and form an important part of the forest ecosystem. By choosing FSC-certified products, you are helping to protect the diversity of insects and animals found in our forests – both large and small.

YARN armchair
Design: Mia Cullin

Yarn is a unique and environmentally friendly armchair developed in the experimental collaborative project called “The Kinship Method”. The armchair with its few components, has a light weight and an almost floating look. Sustainability and the environmental impact have been central to the design and choice of materials. In Materia’s production, the backrest´s beautiful pattern is braided by hand using hemp strings. The seat and back cushions are padded with hairlok, which is a mixture of horsehair and natural latex, as well as needle felt. To provide extra comfort, wool is also included as part of the back cushion. The wood is FSC®-labelled, and the frame with recycled steel is available in all Colours by Materia (CbM*) colours. Yarn is suitable for many different spaces, such as hotels, restaurants, and in offices. The armchair is also an excellent choice when environmentally friendly furniture is a requirement.

DOMINO chair/table

The Domino chair and tables in three different sizes, are characterised by light organic shapes and an appealing character. The series is produced from FSC®-labelled wood, which means that it generates a minimal carbon footprint. The chair and tables are made of solid and veneered ash. The finish is in white pigmented or black stained ash. The decorative metal fastener towards the round table top, and the sand cast iron foot, are both in Colours by Materia (CbM) dark grey powder coating. The warm feel of the wood, the concealed fixings, and the oval shape of the legs contribute to the elegant design. The chair is stackable and is available non-upholstered, with an upholstered seat, or with an upholstered seat and inner back. The Domino series is suitable for many different spaces such as cafes, restaurants, dining rooms, offices, break areas or other types of spaces with high demands on flexibility and dense furnishing.

UNI folding table

The Uni folding table complements the flexible Uni table series. The four lockable castors with intermitted brakes make the table easy to move, as well as stable and steady when locked. The folding table can easily be folded together by pulling the bar under the table top towards oneself. It is available in three sizes and several different finishes. A stacking protector prevents scratches when the tables are stacked together for storage. The Uni folding table is suitable for meeting rooms, cafeterias, social spaces, and lecture halls. The wood is FSC®-labelled. Frame in chrome or Colours by Materia (CbM*) powder coating.

AMBIENT beam sofa, 2-seater unit + corner connection with table

The Ambient beam sofa focuses on design and comfort. While sturdy, the design is neat, minimalistic and sophisticated. The seat units can easily be replaced individually, if necessary. The 2-seater unit is one of the new features for the spring of 2022 alongside the corner unit with round table top, which can be mounted in five different positions. Ambient has many options, such as different beam lengths, several types of armrests, screens with or without magazine holders, and tables that provide a pleasant extra surface. As a complement to the table tops are borders and magazine holders as well as a black plant tray. The solid wood table tops, like the wooden seat base, are FSC®-labelled. Power outlets in the table top and fittings for floor mounting are available as accessories. Frame, armrests, borders for table tops and magazine holders in Colours by Materia (CbM*) powder coating. The flexible Ambient beam sofa is suitable for lounge areas, coworking spaces, hospitals, schools, and universities.

PILOT conference chair, high back

Pilot is a conference chair with an enhanced sense of support and an inviting design. The gently sloping backrest gives character but, above all, comfort. The backrest is available in two different heights, low and high. The high backrest is new for the spring of 2022. This gives the conference chair an even more exclusive look, and makes it perfect for longer meetings, as you can lean back and receive support for your entire back and head. Details such as the gently arched armrests and the opening between the seat and the backrest create a functional design. Pilot is height-adjustable, rotatable, and has a tilt function, which provides a flexible and ergonomic way of sitting. The wood is FSC®-labelled. The frame is available in Colours by Materia (CbM*) powder coating. Choose between castors and glides.

Since the end of August, we have had the honour of having two students from France with us at Materia, Lena Chasseloup and Anatole Durre who normally study at the EPF School of Engineering in Paris, France.

How has it been living in Sweden this autumn?
– This semester in Sweden was a great experience! It was nice to discover a new culture. The nature around Tranås is beautiful, and we were able to enjoy the lake, at least when it was not yet frozen. We had a great time here and we don’t want to go back.

What have you been doing during your time at Materia?
– The work carried out during this internship focused on a time study, with the aim of moving from a weekly to a daily planning. For this, we had to carry out a frequency study as well as a study of production times. Once these studies were completed, a solution had to be found to plan on a daily basis. The solution we chose was to develop an Excel program to automatically schedule and allocate each order by day according to priorities.

What have you learned?
– This internship gave us a better understanding of how a company works. We learned more about production lines and how to make a piece of furniture. We also learned to conduct studies, and deepened our knowledge of programming. This internship was also an opportunity to improve our Swedish.

What is the best thing about being an intern at Materia?
– The best thing about Materia is the very nice atmosphere, everyone was kind and welcoming with us. This is a part of the reason why we will keep very good memories of this internship.

Is there something special about Sweden you will miss when you return to France?
– What we will certainly miss are the people we have met. We will also have a hard time getting rid of good Swedish habits like Fika. The fresh air of Tranås will also be missed.

– It has been a pleasure to have Lena and Anatole at Materia for almost 4 months. With their commitment and curiosity, they have achieved a lot during their time with us. They have been an appreciated addition to our team and we wish them all the best in the future! says production technician Mikael Gustavsson.

CAP stool

Cap, an easily positioned stool, was inspired by sewing thimbles. Its light weight and distinct shape make it easy to take out for impromptu meetings at workstations or to provide extra seating in meeting rooms or lounge environments. The stacking rings for the non-upholstered Cap, are now new in CbM* as standard. The stool also comes fully upholstered in Remix fabric from Kvadrat. The great selection of colours makes it easy to fit into any environment. A stacking trolley is available as an optional extra.

NEO LITE bar stool

The beautiful lines of Neo Lite create a comfortable bar stool which looks interesting and ‘enlivening’ regardless of from which direction you look at it. Behind the clean, self-explanatory design lies a solid piece of workmanship. All the details have been carefully tested and reviewed. Now launching a fully upholstered seat shell in fabric or leather and a wooden frame in solid white pigmented or black stained ash. Already available are a seat shell in polypropylene in CbM*, non-upholstered or upholstered seat and sled base in chrome alt. silver grey or CbM* powder coating. The Neo/Neo Lite range also includes exclusive conference chairs as well as chairs and armchairs in different variants.

ROCCA stool
Design: Alexander Rehn

The Rocca stool has a playful design that helps the body to keep active. The steel tubing gives the stool a minimalistic appearance, something that also makes it unique. The ring encourages movement and the seat lets you sit comfortably. Together they form a unit that interacts. There are now optional hanging devices to protect the table tops and simplify when cleaning. Rocca is a different kind of seating that is easy to carry around in activity-based meeting places. Frame in chrome or CbM* powder coating. Rocca is available in height 500 and 615 mm.
